Phoenix Coyotes Bankruptcy May Go to Mediation

Phoenix Business Journal: The Phoenix Coyotes and prospective buyers of the team will be in court September 22, 2009, before U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Redfield Baum. The court will hold a hearing on whether it will require the National Hockey League to participate in mediation concerning the possible sale of the Coyotes move to another city.

Arizona attorney Pilar Thomas has been selected to become a Deputy Solicitor for Indian Affairs for the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Heirs of Comic Book Creator Seek to Recapture Copyrights

Wall St. Journal: “The heirs of late comic-book creator Jack Kirby served 45 copyright-termination notices to Marvel Entertainment Inc., Walt Disney Co. and other Hollywood studios relating to comic-book characters and stories created by Mr. Kirby, including ‘X-Men’ and ‘The Fantastic Four.'”

IRS Extends Amnesty Deadline for Off-Shore Bank Users

USA Today: American tax-evaders who have used offshore bank accounts have more time to voluntarily disclose assets under an extension of an IRS amnesty program.

The leniency program, originally due to expire Wednesday, will continue until Oct. 15, said government officials with direct knowledge of the decision. The officials were granted anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the issue before the announcement.

IRS to Audit 6,000 Companies for Employment Tax Compliance

The IRS announced that 6, 000 businesses will soon hear the dreaded words, “we are from the government and we are here to help audit you.” The purpose of the audits is to determine if the victims companies report and pay all employment taxes used to fund Social Security and Medicare. The random audits will begin February 2010.
