Gay-rights Group’s Lawsuit Protests Health-care Loss

Arizona Republic:  “A gay-rights group has filed suit seeking damages for state employees whose families will lose their health-care coverage following the elimination of domestic-partner benefits.  House Bill 2013, signed into law this year by Gov. Jan Brewer, eliminates health benefits for domestic partners effective next year.   The move will strip benefits from about 800 people, saving the state an estimated $3.3 million when it takes effect next October.”

Family of Man Shot, Paralyzed by Scottsdale Police Files $40M Lawsuit

Arizona Republic:  “The family of a man shot and paralyzed last year by Scottsdale police filed a $40 million lawsuit against the city, 18 police officers and a dispatcher.  Attorneys for David Hulstedt argue that Scottsdale police used excessive force when two SWAT team officers shot Hulstedt in the lower torso, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down after a barricade situation.  ‘The two shooters had no cause to shoot this unarmed man in the back without warning or even telling him he was under arrest,’ said Alan Simpson, an attorney representing the Hulstedt family.”

Photo-enforcement Critic’s Cases Raise Issues with System

Arizona Republic:  “For photo-enforcement critics, Dave Vontesmar became something of a hero after he was accused of speeding down Valley freeways with a monkey mask strapped to his head.   But as Vontesmar’s many alleged violations have entered the court system, his cases have demonstrated some issues related to the volume of violations that few predicted when the statewide photo-enforcement program hit Arizona: overwhelmed courts, violations that aren’t served or are dismissed and hearings that are set many months after the citation arrives in the mail.”
