Channel3000.com: “MIDDLETON, Wis. — As police respond to traumatic events, sometimes children can be found sitting to the side of the emergency, feeling lonely and scared. For years, officers have comforted them with stuffed animals, but that’s now changing. Laws typically are meant to protect people and to make sure they’re safe. The new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act does that too, but it has law enforcement officers rethinking handing out stuffed animals because of the chemicals they might contain.”

There is one inaccuracy in this article: the CPSIA DOES NOT MAKE CHILDREN SAFER. Come on people (especially journalists), don’t be sheep! When you see an article saying teddy bears are too dangerous for traumatized children your bull**** monitor should kick in BIG TIME!
The heart of the CPSIA is phobia. Rational analysis of real dangers to children is not part of this law. In fact the law specifically prohibits the CPSC from using risk analysis in determining what is legal and what is not. That is why:
– Children’s books published before 1985 are now essentially illegal to sell. No child has ever been hurt by the lead in these books.
– Children’s bicycles are essentially illegal to sell due to lead in the valve stems. Children would have to be pumping up their tires 24/7 to absorb as much lead as they get in their dinner each night.
– Rhinestones are now illegal for children. It has been authoritatively demonstrated that a child would have to swallow from 20 to 300 (depending on size) rhinestones EVERY DAY to absorb as much lead as they do in their daily food.
– This is just the tip of the iceberg, the list of totally safe children’s items made illegal by this law is sickening: tricycles, scooters, science kits, rocks (yes, rocks!), microscopes, telescopes, any clothing with snaps or zippers, and this list goes on and on.
You may not have noticed these items missing from stores yet. Due to the ridiculousness of this law the CPSC has been forced to issue numerous stays of execution. But these stays are temporary. February 14 next year is going to be a watershed day and your child’s creative and educational environment is going to be deeply impoverished with very little, if any, return in safety.
As I said, the heart of the CPSIA is phobia. These phobias will filter down to our children. While their world is being impoverished of many of the best (and safest) creative and educational products they will learn to fear everything in their envirionment.
We owe our children better than this, we could hardly do worse.
Lest anyone think I am an anti-legislation conservative: I AM NOT. I am a lifelong Democrat living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I voted for Sen. Diane Feinstein, Sen. Barbara Boxer, Rep. Mike Thompson and Barack Obama. All democrats, all standing behind this phobic law. Do I have voters remorse? More than I can express! Would I vote for them again? I can’t imagine how in good conscience I could – I have a six year old daughter.
